| | Japanese Tattooing - Ransho is a stunning collection of photographs of Japanese men and women with large/full body tattoos. I was drawn to this one because it doesn't catalogue individual pieces like a lot of the book I have do...rather it presents the tattooed body as art. I have seen individual photos that use the tattooed body as art but this is the first bound collection I have come across and I was really struck by it. The artist has several images of posed tattooed men, and a tattooless woman standing among them appearing incredibly stark. There are some where he's stretched the image, and many of nude men/women with full suits posed close together creating an awesome display of color and design. There are appx. 25 pages devoted to image detail...close ups of faces in tattoos, dragons, foo dogs, flowers...the remaining photos are of the entire person, so this isn't a good one really for design ideas but should be approached as an collection of art photos. I think it is really well done, albeit small, with full color images...1-2 images per page. Tattoo detail in the images are clear and the little text there is in Japanese. |

This is an amazing collection of Japanese Hannya Outlines by Jack Mosher (Horimouja). I am so glad he chose this subject as it is a personal favorite. Hannya are one of the most striking of the Japanese images, haunting in their one unwavering expression. Hannya are representations of a female Demon, one who is typically jealous or a scorned woman. Hannya are sometimes seen wearing a headdress in order to hide their horns of jealousy. Hannya are one of the most macabre images from Japanese folklore, at once commonplace and startling.
This collection includes 50 full page monochrome outlines of Hannya masks, coupled with Horimouja's amazing attention to details makes this a must have for any collection of Japanese tattoo art and imagery. Absolutely stunning. The book itself is large (appx. 13" x 10.5") and the imagery clean and clear. It is bound by a spiral to make it easier to prop up. |

Horiyoshi's World vol. 1

Size: 10 x 14.5 - Pages: 173 - Published: 1997 - Price: $160 - Binding: Softcover
|
This is Japan's Tattoo Arts Horiyoshi's World....put out by the Japan Tattoo Institute. This book is a brilliant collection of full color photographs and essays chronicling the life and work of Horiyoshi III. Text is in both English and Japanese. Essays, including one by Don Ed Hardy, are listed as:
A living Art; Both are of the Second Generation and Horiyoshi Style Fukushi; The Marvel of the Works of Horiyoshi the Second; Tattooing East and West; Motive and Encounter with Horiyoshi's Tattoo, Commentary on Design, Tattoos from Different Perspectives, Tattoos in Japanese Books, The medical Aspect of Tattooing; Tattoos in the West. There are some translating oddities common in Japanese books translated by Japanese people, but all in all the text is very informative and entertaining. Hardy is the only non-Japanese contributor.
Book includes a timeline biography of Horiyoshi I (Kanae Kuronuma) and Horiyoshi II (Tamotsu Kuronuma) as well as a description of each tattoo/piece.....what/who it is exactly and the story behind the image. Very cool. The tattoos pictured are all done by Horiyoshi III, as far as I can tell, except 2 small pics of tattoos done by Horiyoshi I and II.
All in all it is a great book, they've done a great job collaborating stunning photos and compelling text....the book truly explores and illustrates the talent of the Horiyoshi family. |

|
This is a new copy of A History of Japanese Body Suit Tattooing by Mark Poysden and Marco Bratt. THIS IS MY FAVORITE REFERENCE BOOK ON JAPANESE TATTOOING - INCREDIBLE READ. This book chronicles the development of Japanese tattooing and the social and political forces that helped influence the art and it's significance in Japanese culture. There is a huge chapter on the Yakuza (Japanese mafia) and their tattoos. The second half is devoted to Japanese Imagery and gives detailed explinations about the significance of a huge assortment of popular Japanese imagery like dragons, koi, cherry blossoms, kintaro....all in all a well researched reference book. Text is in English and the photographs are mind blowing, very well done and a must have for any collector of tattoo art.

|
This is Japanese tattoo master Horiyoshi III's 3rd collection of drawings called The Namakubi. It is presented like the 100 Demons and 108 Heroes, hardback, in a cardboard sleeve, but this collection is folded beautifully in dark brown cloth. Nama (fresh) Kubi (neck) is a collection of 30 sketches of severed heads. The sketches are not bound, the are loose prints wrapped in paper in 3 sets of 10, which rest within the cloth binding/cover. Prints are perfect for framing. Hard to describe so I photographed the presentation. The book is huge, B4 size (appx. 10" x 14.5") and the prints are the same size. All 30 are produced on thick, high quality paper, they are black and white sketches (with red blood and hanko - his signature chop). The sketches are fantastic, very gruesome ....made more so by the intricate and ornate backgrounds. Truly stunning. Text in Japanese. |

The images are full page and the color is stunning. This book is beautiful....well bound and pages done on nice thick paper. Tattoo imagery tends follows traditional Japanese motifs, gods, dragons, carp, tigers and the like. This book is more for the collector than the casual browser looking for ideas...just a heads up.

This book is beautiful. 100 nice and big full page sketches from Japanese tebori legend. This is an amazing reference book, complete with a page each on claws and tails.
