UKIYE-O MASTERS PHOTO COLLECTION

Kawanabe Kyosai Collection

Size: 8.5” x 11” - Pages: 172 - Published: 2008 - Price: $52 - Binding: Softcover
A new publication of master Kawanabe Kyosai's work. If you can't afford to shell out over $300 for his Demons of Painting - this is the next best thing. Text is in Japanese but there are tons of high quality full color pages...plus it includes some great close ups of some of the smaller but no less intricate faces found in his work. Last but not least it features his entire scroll on the fart war - a whole village of people running around farting on each other, gathering butt dust in bags and chasing each other with it...women and children hiding under futon. Seriously hilarious. I saw it last year here in Tokyo at an exhibition on Humor in Japanese Art and have been looking for it in print ever since. They've finally published it in it's entirety. This book is seriously a gem. Tons of brilliant monsters, demons, oni, animals, ghosts, evil spirits, haunted women, sprites - all the creatures of Japanese legend are captured here. This is a really cool book. One of my new favorites.Kyosai was a student of Kuniyoshi and these two stand out among the painters from the floating world for their renditions of things strange, weird and frightening. Kyosai was an avid Sake drinker and an amazing storyteller, he enjoyed frightening his audiences and could always touch a nerve with his vivid imagination. He has been said to spare no canvas in his paintings, they are busy and multifaceted, the center object rarely being what captures the eye after the initial reaction of shock wears off. Hiding in the background are oni (Japanese mythological demons), ghosts, skeletons and blood hungry ghouls. (plus several things I can't identify). His artwork is brilliant for larger tattoo pieces. This will be one of those books you don't want to leave around the shop but pull out for your favorite customers, pieces you can truly get excited about. The book would also make a great addition to any ukiyo-e collection. Book reads left to right, Japanese style and all text is in Japanese.

Birds and Flowers by Ito Jakuchu

Size: 7 x 10 - Pages: 128 - Published: 2004 - Price: $45 - Binding:  Softcover

This book is called Doubutzu Shokubutsu Sai Kai (loosely translated this means - animal and plant colorful pictures) and it is  the best Jakuchu survey book for the buck. It includes most of his bird/flower and animal studies - nice big prints of his roosters!

Jakuchu was born in Kyoto, Japan in 1715. He is a solitary figure in the history of Japanese painting, way ahead of his time his style decorative, elaborate and daring. He remained unknown until well after his death, when he was rediscovered in the late 19th century.

Jakuchu's animals are a personal favorite....his phoenix and roosters in particular. This book includes images of ducks, his roosters,  the phoenix, peacock, butterfly, cranes, many great fish, octopus (my favorite), toad, dragonflies, crickets and other insects, stingray, shells and assorted small birds...also includes a variety of trees, plants, leaves and flowers. His choice of color and attention to detail are both unique yet quintessentially Japanese. He brings subtle earth tones to life with brilliant red accents - a sun or rooster crown. His underwater scenes are equally stunning, darker yet with vivid details.  This book includes full page, full color reproductions of his birds and animals, as well as separate full pages devoted to close ups of particular points of interest - a rooster head or a particularly vivid fish. Brilliant resource book and a must have for any tattoo art book collection.

Size: 8.5 x 11 - Pages: 224 - Published: 2006 - Price: $60 - Binding:  Softcover

This is a new copy of A History of Japanese Body Suit Tattooing by Mark Poysden and Marco Bratt. THIS IS MY FAVORITE REFERENCE BOOK ON JAPANESE TATTOOING - INCREDIBLE READ. This book chronicles the development of Japanese tattooing and the social and political forces that helped influence the art and it's significance in Japanese culture. There is a huge chapter on the Yakuza (Japanese mafia) and their tattoos. The second half is devoted to Japanese Imagery and gives detailed explinations about the significance of a huge assortment of popular Japanese imagery like dragons, koi, cherry blossoms, kintaro....all in all a well researched reference book. Text is in English and the photographs are mind blowing, very well done and a must have for any collector of tattoo art.

Youkai Zukan (Monster Dictionary)

Size: 7 x 10.5 - Pages: 183 - Published: 2002 - Price: $58 - Binding:  Hardcover w/cardboard sleeve

This book is called YOUKAI ZUKAN which means monster picture dictionary. This book is a collection of prints featuring bakemono - evil spirits, demons, and ghosts from Japanese folklore. The book is divided into 3 sections. The first is a comparison of two scrolls featuring images of the same demons. The images on the left page are from bakemono zukushi - an arrangement of 30 prints of monsters all done on one scroll now owned by Kagaya in Akita. The scroll's creator is believed to be Zushou Toba but this and the date it was created are unconfirmed. The right side features images of the same creatures as the left but presumably are an earlier rendition. This scroll (on the right) was done in 1737 by Takayuki, and is now owned by the Fukuoka Museum. It too features 30 images of bakemono and are renditions based on Hyaku Monogatari, a story game told round the fire during the Edo period (1600-1867) - traditional Japanese ghost stories featuring 100 obakemono (ghosts, demons, goblins or supernatural entities) that later became popular subject matter for some of the ukiyo-e (painters of the floating world) masters like Kuniyoshi and Kyosai. The second section is called bakemono emaki (monster scroll) and it features 22 full color demon images done on a scroll from the 1800's by another unknown artist. The scroll now belongs to the Kawasaki museum. The third section features 1 scroll from 1832 by Shigeru Oda. The scroll includes 58 monochrome images of monsters but these images are smaller and include the stories of the monsters (in Japanese). All in all it is an awesome compilation and a great book to add to any collection of ukiyo-e prints as well as make a great reference book for artists in need of gruesome and fantastically surreal Japanese apparitions.

Hokusai's 100 Ghosts

Size: 7” x 10” - Pages: 210 - Published: 2004 - Price: $58 - Binding: Hardcover
This book is the best compilation I've come across that is devoted solely to Hokusai's macabre prints and images. Put out by the same group that did, Yoshitoshi's 100 Demons, Kyosai's 100 Demons and Kuniyoshi's 100 demons (also available in the section), this book is incredibly well done. I'm pretty excited about it! It is called Hokusai Yokai Hyakkei (Hokusai's monsters 100 images). Hokusai is probably the most well known of the ukiyo-e "pictures of the floating world" artists...he did the Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji (circa 1826-33). This book is divided into 4 sections Earth, Water, Fire and Wind. The first section...earth, contains full color, full page prints, The second section, water, contains monochrome images....full and quarter page, the third section, fire, contains half and quarter page tri-color images and sketches and the last section, wind, contains quarter page monochrome prints. It is a stunning book full of Japanese ghost, demons, oni, evil creatures and spirits.....a must have for anyone pursuing classic Japanese art and imagery.
Kuniyoshi's 100 Ghosts

Size: 7” x 10” - Pages: 112 - Published: 2003 - Price: $58 - Binding: Hardcover
This books is really amazing. It is Kuniyoshi's 100 Apparitions, a book comprised of three scrolls of ghosts, heroes slaying demons, oni, evil spirits and dragons. The colors striking and his attention to detail is incredible - each print is a myriad of intense patterns and imagery. These prints are multi-layered and I find my eye drawn to something different each time I go through it. Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861) is one of the forefathers of full color Ukiyo-e. He is renowned for his dynamic renditions of historical heroes and strong women. He approaches each work as a storyteller and as a result has created excellent prints in all ukiyo-e genres - beauties, heroes and the bakemono (monster) renditions. This book includes over 111 images, 109 of them large full color ones. The first section is a scroll called Kai - the mysterious/odd. The second part is a scroll called Mou - hallucunations, delusions and the third scroll is called Kyou - the amuse/enjoy oneself. The Sections are marked but please note all text is in Japanese.

This is a great survey book on the works of master ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Hiroshige - a contemporary of Hokusai. He was inspired to become an Ukiyo-e artist by Hokusai's 36 veiws of Mt. Fuji (Hiroshige was a fireman by trade, like his father) and he made his mark in history with his own 56 Stations of the Tokaido - painting famous views along this long road that connects Edo (Tokyo) with Kyoto. Ito Jakuchu Museum Collection

Size: 9.5” x 12” - Pages: 398 - Published: 2002 - Price: $470 - Binding: Hardcover w/box

This book is so badass - it was my Christmas present to myself! It is Ito Jakuchu's entire collection put out by the Kyoto National Museum. It is 200 pages of his paintings, with close up studies of some of the more popular prints - particularly the bird/water scenes. Jakuchu was born in Kyoto, Japan in 1715. He is a solitary figure in the history of Japanese painting, way ahead of his time his style decorative, elaborate and daring. He remained unknown until well after his death, when he was rediscovered in the late 19th century. This book is so thorough it comes with it's own catalog of information about each of the paintings. Insane.

Jakuchu's animals are a personal favorite....his phoenix and roosters in particular. His choice of color and attention to detail are both unique yet quintessentially Japanese. He brings subtle earth tones to life with brilliant red accents - a sun or rooster crown. His underwater scenes are equally stunning, darker yet with vivid details. His octopus is one of my favorite creatures of all times, look carefully, there is a little baby clutching on of his tentacles...awesome. This is a book for collectors. This book is appx. 9.5" x 12" and almost 400 pages. Text is in Japanese and book reads right to left, Japanese style. The print book is all imagery, very little text. The additional catalog is softcover, 150 pages and includes an introduction and list of the plates in English, as well as the Japanese explanations.

This is an insanely cool tattoo reference book called Kuniyoshi's Suikoden in Outline, put out by the Japan Tattoo Institute. This book is intense consisting of full page monochrome outlines of the warriors (Samurai) pulled directly from his Ukiyo-e. It includes a section in the back of the same images, smaller and in color, for additional reference. The attention to detail is insane, Kuniyoshi is a true master of Ukiyo-e art and a very popular source for Japanese tattoo motif. The names of the warriors are in English, the remaining text is minimal and in Japanese.
Neputa Paintings

Size: 8.5” x 8.5” - Pages: 120 - Published: 2004 - Price: $48 - Binding: Softcover
This book was put out by Hirosaki University where the Neputa festival has been held for over 300 years. The paintings are done on huge lanterns which are set to float on the Sea of Japan to ward off disease and natural disasters. Themes include many warriors battling enemies and gods triumphing over demons and evil spirits. The colors are intense and brilliant. This is a great book for anyone interested in traditional Japanese art and culture, and as an artist's reference. It is a great source for anyone interested an a large traditional Japanese tattoo. The text is in Japanese but the book includes an introduction in english and the book is predominately illustrations.
Japanese Ghosts Book - RARE

Size: 8.5” x 11” - Pages: 152 - Published: 1997 - Price: $80 - Binding: Softcover
This book is an amazing collection of traditional Japanese ghost imagery. I ran across it years ago and haven't been able to find another copy until recently. Very, Very cool. Ghosts from both Ukiyo-e and paintings, monochrome and color, as well as photos from Noh plays - a brilliant collection. This book is used but in great condition. It reads right to left, Japanese style and the text is in Japanese but it includes more than enough pictures to make it worth the $$$. It is a brilliant reference book for anyone wishing to delve a little deeper into Japanese macabre art.

Hokusai Encyclopedia - ALL THE MANGA & SKETCHES

Size: 6” x 9” - Pages: 932!! - Published: 2005 - Price: $160 - Binding: Hardcover

This is an AMAZING collection of artwork by Japanese master artist Katsushika Hokusai, one of my personal favorites. This is all 15 of the sketchbooks and Manga COMPLETE and bound in one encyclopedic volume! 932 pages of art - an invaluable reference book! This is all the animals, plants, men, women, gods, architecture, demons, objects - basically everything Hokusai saw in his life that he chronicled for future reference (little did he know how far into the future his material would be referenced!) These prints have been previously published individually both in paperback and hardback (the hardback volumes are now out of print), but this is the first time you can get them all in one go. This book is a monster! Text is in Japanese and book reads right to left, Japanese style.

Hokusai Kimono Book (great for line work)

Size: 8.5” x 11.5” - Pages: 80 - Published: 2005 - Price: $45 - Binding: Softcover

This book is awesome. It is a collection of Hokusai prints - nice and big full color close ups of women in kimono. One of the best reference book I've come across for kimono robes and linework. Lost of close ups of the folds and a variety of positions. If you have the sketchbooks are are interested in how it all comes together than this is a good one for you. Very little text, predominately full page illustrations. It is softcover, 8.5" x 11.5" and 80 pages with nice, big illustrations on both sides. All in all a great, no nonsense reference book.
